Purpose
Clayton County Black History Center was founded on November 1, 1989 in Jonesboro, Georgia by Gail Davenport for the purpose of preserving history of African-Americans especially in Clayton County.
Mission
The Center collects African-American artifacts, memorabilia, and information, specializing in history of civic, civil rights and social justice leaders and organizations, Black families, and education of Black children.
For years the Center has held Juneteenth celebrations in June, Kwanzaa events in December and Black History programs during Black History Month in February, honoring African-Americans for their contributions. Some include: Clayton County African-American teachers who taught during the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s before integration in this county, the Tuskegee Airmen, Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, Trumpet Awards
Founder Xernona Clayton, etc. The Tenth Annual African-American Heritage Salute presented by the Center featured the Morehouse College Glee Club and the Eleventh Annual Salute featured the African-American Philharmonic Orchestra.
